Cheese on Bread - 'Maybe Maybe Maybe Baby'

Local indie-pop artists Cheese on Bread are funny. Really, really funny. Singers Sara Fitz-Simmons and Dan Fishback possess ridiculously cute voices and even cuter, profanity-laden lyrics. They’re kind of like The Moldy Peaches, but with less songs about crack and more ditties about heterosexual fruit flies, gay cowboys and awesome dairy products.

On the group’s album Maybe Maybe Maybe Baby, Fitz-Simmons and Fishback trade words in a call-and-answer fashion. Opening track “Where the Fuck Are They?” finds Fitz-Simmons searching for a new boyfriend, while Fishback shoots down every candidate mentioned.

“Where have all the cowboys gone?” asks FitzSimmons, only to be told by Fishback that they’ve all gone gay now and that, “They’re making me yawn; yes, everyone’s a media cliché.” The band is frequently tongue-in-cheek, and mind you, this line was written and recorded before the Brokeback Mountain-“Is this controversial?”-media blitz.

The honest tomfoolery continues on tracks like “The Kiss Song,” which boasts a chorus of, “If I ever let you kiss me again, you’ll have to answer to my fist,” and “Modern Art Gallery,” which compares the vagueness of a lover’s emotions to a modern art gallery.

The band makes a few more pseudo-social statements along the way. On the ironic “Biological Romance,” Fishback discusses how homosexuality is easier for frogs to deal with, because they can just turn themselves into the opposite gender and, voila, instant socially acceptable sexual orientation.

Since the release of Maybe Maybe Maybe Baby, Cheese on Bread has expanded to a quintet, rounded out by Matthew Keesan, Dibson Hoffweiler and Kevin Kelly (aka Side of Fries), who all switch guitar, bass and percussion positions on a whim. The band is currently on a break of sorts from playing shows together, but can still be found on the Internet, with plenty of songs up for free enjoyment.
